Viktor Orbán continues to win elections in Hungary, although for the first time in 14 years he faces a serious challenger. The Hungarian national-populist prime minister won again, but the result was marred by the emergence of Péter Magyar, a dissident who secured 30.3% of the votes. Fidesz, Orbán's party, won 11 of Hungary's 21 seats in the European Parliament, two fewer than in 2019, and its worst historical percentage, at 43.9%. The opposition was practically annihilated, and Tisza, the Magyar party, consolidated itself with seven MEPs. Orbán's campaign was centered on the war in Ukraine and his pro-Putin rhetoric. The rise of Magyar, who emerged after a scandal over pardons granted by the Hungarian administration, positions him as the main rival to Orbán ahead of the 2026 parliamentary elections.
