The Spanish Interior Minister, Fernando Grande-Marlaska, arrived this Sunday in Algiers, marking the first visit by a representative of the Spanish government to the Maghreb country since the diplomatic crisis that took place between 2022 and 2024. Grande-Marlaska was received by his Algerian counterpart, Said Sayoud, in a meeting that aims to strengthen ties and address crucial issues, such as the increase in irregular migration along the route that connects Algeria with Spain. Accompanied by senior officials, including the Directors General of International Relations and Civil Protection, the visit takes place in a context in which migratory flows have increased considerably.
The data reflect a worrying 87% increase in the arrival of immigrants to the coasts of Spain from Algeria compared with the previous year. Between January and October this year, the Balearic Islands have received 327 migrant boats with a total of 6,030 migrants, a figure that already surpasses the total registered in all of 2024. According to UNHCR, the majority of migrants who have arrived irregularly on the Spanish coasts come from Algeria, which underscores the urgency of negotiations between the two countries to manage this migratory crisis.
