The complex and meticulous restoration of the emblematic Frontón Beti Jai in Madrid has been awarded the highest national recognition in the field of conservation of cultural goods. The Ministry of Culture has awarded the 2025 National Prize for Restoration and Conservation of Cultural Property to this project, highlighted as an example of collaboration between the citizenry and the administration to resurrect a unique architectural treasure in Europe.
Located in the Chamberí neighborhood, Beti Jai, whose history dates back to 1894 and which was designed by architect Joaquín Rucoba, had been neglected for decades. However, in 2011 it was protected as a Cultural Interest Asset, and shortly after, the Madrid City Council undertook its expropriation and subsequent restoration, an effort that entailed an investment of nearly 40 million euros. The project restored the building's original splendor, working on the recovery of its structure, facades, and roofs, also thanks to the financial support of Foro por Madrid, which contributed €50,000.
Since its reopening in 2024, the fronton has flourished as a vibrant cultural and sports center. In its facilities, activities have been developed that range from guided tours and children's workshops to concerts and exhibitions of ball games. More than 145,000 people have enjoyed these proposals, which underscores the success of Beti Jai as the new cultural epicenter of the capital.
This recognition highlights not only the architectural value of the frontón, but also the powerful alliance between civil society and the institutions. The Salvemos el frontón Beti Jai platform played a vital role in the reactivation of this iconic space, now converted into a symbol of history, art, and community. Beti Jai, whose meaning is 'Always Party', reaffirms its place in the heart of Madrid as a reflection of the city's vitality and cultural diversity.
