The Quintana Roo Attorney General's Office has brought the serviceman Jairo N to trial, accused of sexually abusing a 9-year-old girl in Cozumel. The incident, which occurred on August 30, has also resulted in charges of injuries and unlawful detention, with him remanded in pretrial detention. Raciel López Salazar, the State's Attorney General, emphasized the Army's commitment to justice, highlighting its cooperation to ensure that there is no impunity. Given the seriousness of the case, around 40 collectives have demanded the maximum sentence for Jairo N, in addition to criticizing actions that revictimize the minor's family.
The case has raised concerns about other potential victims, as the girl mentioned the presence of other underage girls in the soldier's house. Collectives point to an inadequate judicial process and denounce the pressure exerted on the family to change their testimony. José Luis Chacón, the mayor of Cozumel, corrected initial comments that blamed the parents for neglect, ensuring support for the family. However, there are persistent allegations of harassment and manipulation by the authorities. Organizations insist on investigating the integrity of other potential victims and criticize the lack of action by the Cozumel DIF.
