The Madrid City Council has announced an ambitious plan to modernize public lighting along one of its main city axes: the Paseo de la Castellana, in the stretch between Nuevos Ministerios and Plaza de Castilla. This project, managed by the Works and Equipment Area, will be implemented in the coming days and is expected to be completed by the end of the year. The investment to carry this out amounts to 1.2 million euros and will focus on two main interventions: the installation of new street lighting on the walkable boulevards and the renewal of the luminaires on the sides of the promenade.
In an ambitious technological deployment, 122 new lighting columns will be installed, equipped with high energy-efficiency LED technology. Of these, 113 columns, with a total of 194 luminaires, will be located on the Castellana boulevards, while nine columns with nine luminaires will be installed on the nearby Marceliano Santa María Street. It should be noted that certain areas, such as those affected by the construction of the Santiago Bernabéu Stadium and the Madrid Metro in Plaza de Lima, will not form part of this immediate intervention.
The objective of these innovations is to improve the accessibility and use of these public spaces, significantly increasing the levels of illumination. With an investment of 560,000 euros allocated to this first phase, the project also contemplates the execution of significant civil works, such as electrical cabling and the installation of new foundations and manholes.
At the same time, the street lighting on the side streets of the Paseo de la Castellana and Plaza de Castilla will also undergo a transformation. The modernization includes the renewal of the existing supports and the replacement of 204 obsolete light points with modern LED luminaires, addressing lighting occlusion issues caused by the tree canopy at certain times of the year. This part of the project represents an investment of 625,000 euros.
With these measures, the City Council aims not only to improve nighttime visibility, increasing safety in the area, but also to promote significant energy savings. The implementation of an innovative brightness adjustment system has been planned, tailored to the specific needs of street nightlife, which will not only optimize energy consumption but also reduce light pollution.
This project symbolizes the Madrid City Council's commitment to the modernization and efficiency of its public lighting infrastructure. To date, the city council has managed to replace more than 74,000 streetlights across the city, thereby reaching 66% of Madrid's 253,000 streetlights that are already equipped with LED technology. With this initiative, Madrid continues to advance toward a more sustainable and efficient future in the use of its energy resources.
