Two Spaniards stand out in the World Top 20 Trophy Hunters amid a growing environmental debate.

Two Spaniards appear on the list of the world's most prolific trophy hunters, according to a new report by the British NGO Campaign for the Prohibition of Trophy Hunting (CBTH). Marcial Gómez Sequeira, former president of Sanitas, is in eighth place, having killed at least 2,000 animals from 420 species. Their attempt to create a hunting museum in Extremadura was thwarted after a police investigation into the trafficking of protected species. In tenth place is José Martí Ruano, with a record of 258 species hunted. The CBTH also highlights Antonio 'Tony' Sánchez Ariño, known for his books, as the most productive trophy hunter, with more than 4,000 animals killed, including gorillas and a large number of elephants.

The report, which includes a listing of 15 Americans and three Russians, highlights the construction magnate George Harms as the number one. The publication coincides with the tenth anniversary of Cecil's death, a lion in Zimbabwe whose hunting caused worldwide outrage. According to data from the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species, since then, at least 10,000 lions have been killed by hunters. The CBTH, alongside public figures such as Jane Goodall and Ricky Gervais, calls for an international moratorium on the hunting of endangered species, while the mixed trade of legal and illegal trophies persists.
