On November 9, the town of Bonrepòs i Mirambell will become the epicenter of a solidarity mobilization in the fight against childhood cancer, the leading cause of death from disease among children aged 0 to 14 in Spain. The "A Leap for Life for Childhood Cancer" event aims to raise funds to supplement public funding for research in this crucial field.
Adela Cañete, scientific director of the Spanish Registry of Pediatric Tumors (RETI-SEHOP) and researcher at La Fe Hospital, highlights the notable increase in the survival rate of children with cancer, which has risen from 55% in the 1980s to 84% today. Cañete emphasizes that advances in medical research have been critical to this improvement and have reduced the risk of failure by 60% in recent years.
The event, organized by Kangooclub Rockandjumps, RETI-SEHOP, IISLAFE and the SEHOP Foundation, has the backing of academic and governmental institutions such as the University of Valencia and the City Council of Bonrepòs i Mirambell. The active participation of the community is expected, and they will be able to register for the online event.
The day will include a variety of activities for all ages: a Kangoo Jumps masterclass, boxing and cubbà exhibitions, inflatable castles, live music, live radio, a charity market, and the tasting of a giant paella at a symbolic cost of 2 euros, thanks to Original Paella.
The importance of citizen micro-donations has been reiterated in the official presentation of the event. These contributions are vital to supplement public funding and enable the ongoing development of clinical and epidemiological research. In the 2024 edition, more than 3,100 euros were raised for pediatric oncology at La Fe Hospital.
For those who cannot attend, the organization has enabled collaboration options through microdonations, supporting the cause under the motto "each leap drives research". With nearly 1,100 cases of childhood cancer diagnosed annually in Spain, the need for public support is more urgent than ever.
