Madrid's Primary Care Promotes Sustainability with Initiatives for a Responsible Prescription of Inhalers

A recent study carried out by primary care pharmacists from the Eastern and Northwestern Health Directorates has presented new guidelines for a more responsible prescription of inhalers in the treatment of various respiratory pathologies. This analysis suggests considering the environmental impact of these devices, differentiating according to the type of inhaler, the materials used, their manufacture, transport, and the potential for reuse and recycling.

In particular, specialists recommend preferring dry powder inhalers and fine-mist inhalers, which have a lower environmental impact compared with traditional pressurized inhalers, which contain highly polluting gases.

In addition, the document emphasizes the importance of diagnostic confirmation and proper control of respiratory diseases. It also emphasizes the need to educate patients about the proper use of these devices and to promote their recycling in community pharmacies. Proper recycling could prevent the emission of up to 348 tonnes of CO2 per year in the country.

These recommendations are aligned with the European Union's Pharmaceutical Strategy and the guidelines of Regulation (EU) 2024/573, in force since the beginning of this year, which aim to significantly reduce fluorinated gas emissions in medical devices. Primary Care in the Community of Madrid is thus highlighted as a crucial actor in the fight against climate change, demonstrating that sustainability is also a matter of public health.
