Boat Trip: No Showers or Toilet Paper, An Adventure or a Misadventure?

The San Sebastián Gastronomika congress, held last week, launched a singular challenge in its 27th edition: to find a brave chef willing to relive the voyage of the 16th-century whalers aboard the replica of the San Juan nao. The candidates must be motivated to face rustic living conditions, with no access to showers or toilet paper, and have knowledge of seamanship. Starting in 2027, the 40 crew members will immerse themselves in an experience that recreates the past, from their clothing to the way of life on board.

The voyage is the result of a project that began more than ten years ago at the Albaola factory. In this edition of the congress, chefs such as Aitor Arregi and Josean Alija prepared dishes inspired by the diet of the ancient whalers, which could influence the chosen one's menu. The selection of the ideal chef will take place in the coming months, with the aim of assembling an international crew representing diverse countries, who are interested in taking part in this historic adventure.
