On October 21, 2025, Hospital del Mar has been in the news for a notable recognition obtained during the 29th Clinical Toxicology Conference and the 19th Toxicovigilance Conference in Madrid. A joint effort between its Emergency Department and the Functional Unit of Toxicology resulted in an award for the best presentation.
The prize-winning study is a comprehensive retrospective multicenter analysis. Eight emergency departments from seven autonomous communities participated in it, highlighting the work of the Functional Toxicology Unit of the Hospital del Mar. This rigorous study encompassed 225 patients treated for caustic-substance ingestion over seven years.
During the conference, two study communications managed to win the recognition for the best presentations in toxicovigilance. The first focused on identifying the risk factors associated with caustic ingestion. The findings indicated that intentional ingestions, cases of suicide attempts, as well as those involving hydrochloric acid and a leukocytosis greater than 15,000, represented a high risk of severity.
The second communication addressed diagnostic concordance between emergency endoscopy and computed tomography, evaluating its accuracy to determine various severity parameters in patients. It was concluded that the sensitivity of endoscopy slightly exceeded that of computed tomography.
This recognition not only highlights the research quality of Hospital del Mar, but also its firm commitment to improving the care of patients affected by poisonings.
