SIM Swapping 2025: The Fraud That Continues to Threaten the Security of Your Finances

In the digital era, the phone number has become a key tool for accessing a wide range of online services, from social networks to bank accounts. However, this dependence has also exposed a significant vulnerability: SIM Swapping, a cyber threat that has persisted for several years and remains a lucrative tactic for criminals in 2025.

SIM Swapping, or fraudulent duplication of the SIM card, has exploited the growing exposure of personal data on the Internet and the weak verification procedures of some operators. Despite advances in cybersecurity, this type of attack, identified en masse in 2019, continues to wreak havoc. The technique does not require advanced technologies, since it is based mainly on social engineering and the exploitation of operational gaps.

The attack begins with the collection of the victim's data through social networks, leaks, phishing, or the darknet. With this information, the criminal impersonates the user to the operator in order to request a duplicate SIM. Once the SIM duplication is activated, the attacker deactivates the original SIM and gains access to the victim's communications, including the two-factor verification codes (2FA) needed to access accounts and perform transactions.

Even in 2025, the control of the phone number remains a critical gateway to high-value operations, especially because many financial services continue to use SMS messages for verification. The time it takes for the victim to detect the lack of signal can provide the attacker with a sufficient window to cause significant damage.

To detect this type of fraud, the unexpected loss of mobile coverage is the main indicator. The problem lies in the fact that this can occur at times when the victim is not paying attention to the phone, such as during the night. A quick response is vital to mitigate the impact.

Protecting yourself against SIM swapping involves a series of recommended practices for both individuals and organizations. On a personal level, it is suggested to limit data exposure on social networks, to use verification methods more secure than SMS, and to avoid public Wi-Fi networks for sensitive operations. Businesses, on the other hand, must implement secure multi-factor authentication, monitor devices, and define rapid response protocols.

The telecommunications sector has begun to implement anti-fraud measures, such as Open Gateway, which allows real-time verification of whether a SIM has been changed. Although SMS is still common as a 2FA method, the trend is shifting toward more secure alternatives.

If someone suspects they have fallen victim to SIM Swapping, they must act immediately by contacting their mobile operator to block the fraudulent SIM, notify the bank, document suspicious transactions, and change passwords.

The FAQs about SIM swapping highlight that this type of attack is targeted, that authentication apps provide additional protection, and that operators play a crucial role in its prevention. In addition, access is not limited to online banking; it also affects other critical services such as social networks and email.
