The automatic transmission has become the preferred option for drivers in Spain, as it makes driving easier by allowing the vehicle to be operated with only the accelerator pedal and the brake. This convenience has led to an increase in sales of cars equipped with this type of transmission. However, many drivers still do not know the specific functions indicated by the letters on the gear shift. The 'S' and the 'P' are two of the most confusing functions; while the first refers to a sequential mode that allows manual control of the gears, the second indicates the electric handbrake used when parking.
Despite their advantages, such as ease of use, automatic changes present notable disadvantages. According to the Royal Automobile Club of Spain, they tend to have fuel consumption that is about 5% higher than manual gearboxes, although technological advances have reduced this difference in recent years. Likewise, maintenance and repair costs are higher, and its market value also tends to be greater. Another important consideration is that automatic cars do not allow engine braking, which implies a greater reliance on brake pads, and that precision in maneuvers such as parking can be compromised by the lack of a clutch.
