The rehabilitation of the tunnel under Madrid's Plaza Mayor to guarantee its structure begins this Monday.

The Madrid City Council will begin this Monday the rehabilitation works on the tunnel located beneath Plaza Mayor, a necessary measure to ensure the structural and functional safety of the space. Recent inspections have revealed significant deterioration in one of the tunnel's sections, caused by water leaks that have affected the beams and deck slabs. The intervention involves both underground and surface works, where pavers will be removed and the damaged structures replaced, all while safety measures for traffic in the area are implemented.

The first phase of the works will last one week and will cause the closure of access to the tunnel from Toledo Street, although the parking facilities will remain operational. From June 16, the second phase will begin, which will entail the complete closure of the tunnel, allowing access to the parking facilities from Atocha Street. The works on the surface of Plaza Mayor are expected to begin on June 26. To mitigate the impact of the closure, the municipality has planned the work in shifts throughout the day, thereby seeking to reduce the execution times and expedite the reopening of the tunnel and its surroundings.
