The Minister of Transport and Sustainable Mobility, Óscar Puente, has celebrated before the Senate the arrival of new airlines in Spain following Ryanair's recent decision to cut one million seats and 36 routes, significantly affecting airports such as Vigo, Santiago and Valladolid. Companies such as Vueling, Binter, Iberia Express and Wizz Air have announced boosts to their operations, especially at Tenerife North and Santiago de Compostela, generating optimism in light of the Irish airline's reduced flights. Puente has emphasized that the Government will not yield to what it considers "blackmail" by Ryanair regarding airport charges.
Under the new provisions, Vueling will increase its capacity by 76,700 additional seats in Santiago and 89,000 in Tenerife Norte, introducing 28 and 25 weekly frequencies on several strategic routes. For its part, Iberia Express will add 30,000 seats, focusing on connecting the Canary Islands with the mainland. Binter will also make its debut with direct flights to Seville, while Wizz Air has expressed its intention to strengthen its presence in the Canary Islands. This panorama contrasts with earlier situations, where Ryanair's withdrawal from other airports was not offset by other airlines, reflecting a notable change in the dynamics of air transport in the region.
