The tech industry is preparing to make a significant leap with the arrival of 6G, which promises to integrate satellite connectivity natively into all smartphones and connected devices. Nokia, recognized for its advances in non-terrestrial networks (NTN), is leading crucial efforts to achieve universal, continuous and robust connectivity.
Currently, NTNs have been incorporated into the 5G ecosystem thanks to Release 17 of the 3GPP standard, which introduced support for NB-IoT over satellite networks. Phones like the Google Pixel 9 and the Samsung S25 already allow sending emergency messages via satellite in areas without terrestrial coverage. However, the true potential will be seen with 6G, where this function will become standard for all devices.
Jeroen Wigard, Senior Research Project Manager at Nokia, underscores the relevance of these advances, stating that 6G technology is designed to offer global connectivity, always available and resilient, especially in critical moments.
The technical advances in NTNs within 3GPP have been rapid. Since the introduction of basic functionalities in version 17, up to the development of advanced capabilities in version 19, which included a regenerative architecture to improve how satellites process and retransmit signals. These improvements reinforce the role of NTN as a fundamental part of 5G.
6G takes this technology to another level. Future devices will be equipped to connect to space networks, eliminating the need for GNSS systems for more reliable connectivity. Additionally, TN-NTN interoperability will be promoted, ensuring an uninterrupted connection in any environment.
Beyond the technological field, the NTNs have a social and economic impact. They contribute to reducing the digital divide by offering communication services to remote areas and promoting global inclusion. In emergency situations, this technology will enable efficient communication and can save lives, in addition to facilitating the growth of sectors such as health, education, and commerce in rural areas.
With 6G, Nokia reaffirms its commitment to innovation, seeking a future where connectivity is secure, global, and accessible to everyone.
