The peace process in Colombia with the FARC's Central General Staff (CGS) dissidents, initially led by Iván Mordisco, has fragmented, generating tensions between the government of Gustavo Petro and the armed groups. In 2023, Mordisco and its faction began peace negotiations, which included a bilateral ceasefire and the renunciation of extortionate kidnapping. However, by 2024, more than half of the EMC, influenced by Mordisco, left the negotiating table, while a faction led by Calarcá Córdoba continued negotiations. The Government, facing attacks from dissident groups, suspended the ceasefire in several regions, and finally stopped negotiating with Mordisco, turning its efforts toward other factions, such as the renowned General Staff of the Blocks and Front (EMBF) under Córdoba.
Despite the initial progress, the negotiations were repeatedly interrupted by violent actions, including attacks against the military and the death of an indigenous leader, which led the Government to designate the EMC, together with other groups such as the Clan del Golfo, as terrorist organizations. The divisions within the dissident groups complicate peace prospects, as the EMC continues to operate in strategic drug-trafficking regions, while the EMBF continues to seek agreements in areas such as Catatumbo. However, the situation remains volatile, with the government trying to maintain dialogue with the sectors willing to negotiate, amid a complex panorama of violence and crime in the country.
