Madrid increases investment in places for people with intellectual disabilities by 30%, to 267.5 million euros.

In an effort to improve care for people with special needs, the government has integrated new quality and certification standards in healthcare centers. Among the innovations are improvements to the equipment, rehabilitation facilities, and the introduction of Snoezelen-type sensory rooms. These rooms, designed to stimulate the senses through lights, sounds, shapes, and aromas, represent a step forward in holistic patient care. Additionally, the menus have been adapted to texture-modified diets for those who suffer from dysphagia, thereby ensuring an adequate and safe diet.

These public centers provide housing, maintenance, and personal support for daily activities. The services also cover physiotherapy, speech therapy, occupational therapy, as well as psychological and social support. The primary objective is to prevent functional deterioration and promote the integration, well-being, and quality of life of the users. To strengthen the relationship with families, a digital tool will be developed that will enable ongoing communication.

In a recent decision, the Governing Council has approved the award of the contract to manage the New Versailles Residence and Day Center in Fuenlabrada. This center will have 165 public places, divided into 125 residential and 40 for daytime care, aimed at adults with severe intellectual disability. The investment, which amounts to 8.9 million euros, represents a 26% increase compared with the previous tender, and is scheduled for the period between November 2025 and October 2027.

In another line of action, the government has allocated 4.4 million euros through 2029 for residential resources in Carabanchel, Madrid. These funds will finance 52 public places for people with severe and long-term mental illnesses, distributed across 24 residences, 12 in supervised apartments and 16 in boarding houses.

These measures are part of a firm commitment to improving the infrastructure and the quality of social services, providing comprehensive support to vulnerable sectors of society.
