The president of Brazil, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, has announced in Jakarta that he will run in the October 2026 elections, with the intention of seeking a fourth term. Nearing 80, Lula has said that he maintains the same energy as when he was 30, during a press conference alongside Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto. The announcement was made during his official visit to Indonesia, where the Brazilian president participated in the signing of bilateral agreements in areas such as energy, mining, agriculture, and technology. Additionally, Lula and Subianto agreed to move forward on a Mercosur-Indonesia Preferential Trade Agreement before the end of the year.
Lula, who founded the Workers' Party (PT), has once again held the presidency since January 1, 2023, after defeating Jair Bolsonaro, who was convicted of attempting a coup d'État. The Brazilian president's tour of Asia will also take him to Malaysia, where he will participate in the ASEAN summit and could have a meeting with the American president, Donald Trump. Lula underscored the importance of strengthening the relationship between Brazil and Indonesia, stating that these meetings make that bilateral relationship more valuable.
