The Los Angeles County authorities have declared a state of emergency in response to the recent raids against immigrants, in a clear confrontation with the Trump administration. This measure aims to provide assistance to residents affected by the actions of Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), which have intensified their operations since last summer. The County Board of Supervisors has highlighted the urgency of the situation, warning that these raids could trigger a housing crisis, affecting not only migrants, but also local businesses.
To mitigate the economic difficulties faced by the community, the county has implemented a rental assistance program (available through an online portal in two weeks) that seeks to delay potential evictions. It is estimated that around 5,000 people were detained in August, which adds to the growing fear among migrants in the region, where nearly a third of the 10 million residents are foreigners. Local authorities will now be able to use funds to provide legal aid and other services to the most vulnerable populations, thereby helping to contain the repercussions of raids in the community.
