The Government of the Community of Madrid has expressed its rejection of the recent declaration of the Real Casa de Correos as a site of Democratic Memory, a decision that was published this Wednesday in the Official State Gazette. Miguel Ángel García Martín, councillor of the Presidency, Justice and Local Administration and spokesperson for the regional government, has said that the file linked to this decision has already expired, given that more than a year has passed from its inception to its publication, which, according to him, amounts to notification of a resolution.
García Martín has denounced the declaration as "sectarian and contrary to history and truth," insisting that the Royal House of the Post Office, the current seat of the Presidency of the Community of Madrid, has been completely re-signified and represents a "common home for all Madrid residents."
During the meeting of the Government Council, the regional spokesperson reaffirmed the intention to "defend the interests of the institution and of the people of Madrid," announcing the filing of an immediate appeal, according to him, backed by law, truth, and history.
This official statement from the central government is based on a report requested from the Ministry of Territorial Policy and Democratic Memory, and prepared by the Royal Academy of History. The report associates the Real Casa de Correos primarily with the Enlightenment period, highlighting its central role in Madrid's social and communal life during the nineteenth century.
