One of Vigo's most emblematic beaches, Samil, will not obtain the coveted Blue Flag this summer due to the lack of excellence in water quality, according to the City Council. This distinction, awarded by the Association of Environmental Education and Consumer (Adeac), recognizes beaches that meet strict environmental and service criteria. Although the water quality of Samil was rated as 'very good', it did not reach the level necessary to obtain the flag. This decision marks the first time the beach loses this recognition since it won it in 2019.
Despite this loss, some areas of Samil Beach will continue to ensure the quality of their services, such as cleaning and lifeguard services. The Vigo City Council has stated that all services will be maintained, even if there is no Blue Flag. Additionally, it has been confirmed that for next year Samil's candidacy will be resubmitted to Adeac with the hope of regaining its status. On the other hand, the city has celebrated earning the Blue Flag for O Mende Beach, highlighting the overall quality of its beaches and their services, despite the challenges posed by cleaning some areas.
