The activation of the Military Emergency Unit (UME) in Galicia has become crucial in light of the serious wildfire situation affecting the municipalities of Pantón and O Bolo. Since its origin on Thursday in the Pombeiro parish, the fire has already consumed hundreds of hectares, forcing the evacuation of three population centers and severely affecting the safety of nearby residents. In Pantón, the mayor José Luís Álvarez has described the progression of the fire as "very bad," with an increase in wind intensity that has complicated efforts to control the flames.
The O Bolo wildfire, which began on Thursday night, has razed approximately 200 hectares and has prompted a lockdown in localities such as Santa Cruz and Lentellais. The Xunta has also closed several roads and train traffic between Ourense and Lugo has been disrupted, implementing a road transport plan to mitigate the impact of the incident. The UME personnel are already intensively collaborating in firefighting operations, initially acting in Pantón and extending their support to O Bolo, where the threat continues to grow.
