The International and European Federations of Journalists have confirmed the death of French photojournalist Antoni Lallican in a drone attack in eastern Ukraine, making him the first journalist to die as a result of such a bombardment since the start of the Russian invasion. The incident occurred around 9:20 local time, when Lallican, who worked for the Hans Lucas agency, was alongside the Ukrainian journalist Heorgiy Ivanchenko, who was also injured in the attack. Both wore protective equipment and bulletproof vests identifying themselves as members of the press.
The French President Emmanuel Macron has expressed his sadness at the loss of Lallican, reiterating the risk faced by journalists in conflict zones to provide information about the war. Lallican, a resident of Paris, had documented the Russian invasion of Ukraine since 2022 and was recognized with the 2024 Victor Hugo Prize for their work. The federations and the French Journalists' Union have condemned the attack and called for an investigation to identify those responsible, recalling that at least 17 journalists have died in the country since the start of the conflict in February 2022.
