Urban Experiences: Travel Without Leaving the City with Cinema, Workshops, and Sensory Games

The Madrid summer is getting ready to welcome «Viajar sin salir», a festival focused on children and adolescents, designed by Espacio Abierto of the Culture, Tourism and Sports Department. This event, scheduled for the month of July, offers an imaginary journey without leaving the capital, ranging from sensory experiences to fantastical and everyday narratives.

The 'isekai' film cycle is one of the festival's main highlights, transporting audiences to magical worlds every Wednesday in July. This Japanese genre invites us to reflect on the emotional impact that adventures in alternate worlds have. The screenings will begin with the French short film 'Vainilla' on July 2, and will continue with the acclaimed 'Spirited Away' by Hayao Miyazaki on July 9. Also on the schedule are the film 'Sirocco and the Kingdom of the Winds' on July 16, and the classic 'The Wizard of Oz' on July 23.

The festival is not limited to cinema. The graphic workshops offer a creative space with activities such as "Ver lo invisible" intended for graphic design, and are led by the award-winning Silvia Fernández Palomar. Additionally, "Souvenirs, memories of the (no) trip" and "The summer we want. Graphic Laboratory" offer the opportunity to imagine and imprint a summer that doesn't need to leave Madrid to be unforgettable.

The sensory proposals add a special appeal. «Journeys to Nowhere» in the Espacio Abierto garden invites you to an exploratory walk with no fixed direction, promoting attention and play. The sensory play environment "Hydrosphere" and the activity "Luggage" foster active imagination, offering aquatic experiences and the symbolic preparation of trips to places that do not exist.

During August, although the festival activities will be paused, the La Quinta Cocina cafe garden will continue operating, providing a summer refuge within Espacio Abierto.

The activities combine free options with paid ones, whose tickets are available on the Espacio Abierto website and at the box office. All programming can be consulted on espacioabiertoqm.com, where dates, times, prices, and recommended ages for each activity are detailed.
