Madrid residents will once again be able to enjoy free trips on EMT Madrid buses. This initiative takes effect on September 1 and will also extend to September 8 and 9. The measure coincides with the return to work after the summer and with the return of students to the classrooms. Excluding the Airport Express line, the city buses will be available free of charge from 00:00 to 23:59 during those days.
For the second consecutive year, the electric public bicycle service Bicimad joins this proposal. During those three days, all trips of up to half an hour will be free. This system, which covers 630 stations and 7,735 bicycles across the entire capital, surpassed 9.95 million trips in 2024. In a similar initiative last April, more than 39,400 people with the basic Bicimad contract took advantage of the offer.
The objective of these actions promoted by the Madrid City Council is to promote public transport and sustainable mobility, offering alternatives to the use of private cars, especially on days with high traffic congestion.
Since January 2021, EMT Madrid has recorded more than 68.86 million trips during the 65 free days implemented in 25 periods, benefiting more than 13.60 million occasional users. Madrid introduced this measure for the first time in January 2021 after the Filomena storm and has kept it on key dates such as the Black Friday and after school and work vacations.
In 2025, this will be the fourth time free public transport is offered in the capital, after implementing it in January and April, including one after the recent blackout. The City Council's strategy will continue, highlighting days with forecasted high traffic or episodes of pollution.
