Judge Juan Carlos Peinado has decided to charge Begoña Gómez, wife of the Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez, with an alleged crime of embezzlement of public funds related to the hiring of her adviser, Cristina Álvarez, at Moncloa. The summons as the person under investigation is scheduled for September 11 at 10:30 hours. This decision marks a change in the investigation, since Gómez had previously only been listed in the case for other crimes, such as influence peddling and embezzlement. The research currently covers four lines of inquiry, including Gómez's management of the professorship at the Complutense University and the aforementioned appointment of Álvarez.
The accusation has generated reactions, especially from the PP, which criticizes President Sánchez's situation, stating that only his pet remains outside the accusations. For its part, the government has defended the presumption of innocence of Gómez and has recalled that the Supreme Court had already decided not to investigate the Minister of the Presidency, Félix Bolaños, in relation to the hiring of Álvarez. The Minister of Territorial Policy, Ángel Víctor Torres, emphasized that there is no evidence of a crime in this context, stressing the importance of respecting judicial decisions.
