The Congress of Deputies has backed a proposal from the People’s Party to conduct an audit of the domestic abuse bracelet system, an initiative that has sparked intense debate among the parties. The measure, which had the support of the PP, Vox, UPN, Coalición Canaria, BNG and a member of the Mixed Group, José Luis Ábalos, is part of the controversy generated by the failures in the system after its management by a new company. While the PSOE abstained, the Prime Minister, Pedro Sánchez, and several Socialist MPs voted against, arguing that the proposal seeks to politically capitalize on the suffering of the victims rather than addressing the situation with genuine commitment.
The criticisms of the PP have been forceful, accusing it of manipulating the anguish of those who suffer gender-based violence to obtain political gain. During the debate, the spokespersons for PSOE, Sumar, and Podemos responded to the initiative by labeling it 'shameful'. In turn, Vox and UPN demanded the resignation of the Minister of Equality and proposed cuts to its funding, while other groups such as the BNG called for respect for the victims in the face of political instrumentalization. From Podemos, the effectiveness of the bracelet system was defended, while various voices argued that the PP's approach was nothing more than an alarmist attempt without solid foundation.
