The threat posed by Mexican drug cartels has intensified in the United States, according to statements by DEA Special Agent Matthew W. Allen, during a Senate hearing. Allen warned about the presence of the Jalisco New Generation Cartel (CJNG) in U.S. territory, stating that its members have carried out espionage operations against DEA agents in Washington. These incidents coincide with the trial of Rubén Oseguera González, alias 'El Menchito', son of the CJNG leader, Nemesio Oseguera. Allen highlighted the cartel's extreme violence, evidenced by retaliations against relatives of informants and the killing of members of the Mexican Navy following the arrest of 'El Menchito'. The DEA faces a constant risk, with its agents under surveillance even as they execute search warrants.
The Senate Judiciary Committee explored the CJNG's violent and global tactics, underscoring the gravity of the problem. After the capture and conviction of "El Menchito," the cartel intensified its violence in Mexico. The United States has responded by designating the cartel as a terrorist organization and increasing the reward for Nemesio Oseguera. Moreover, agents seized more than two million dollars in luxury goods linked to the cartel in California, and arrested Cristian Fernando Gutiérrez, alias 'El Guacho', who had led a life of luxury after faking his death in Mexico. This operation reinforces the commitment of U.S. authorities to confront and dismantle these criminal organizations, whose reach and power pose a constant challenge to national security.
