The plenary session of the City Council of Alcalá de Henares has unanimously granted the title of Adopted Son of the City to Fernando Galván Reula, Emeritus Rector of the University of Alcalá. This distinction comes after a request from the Society of Co-Owners of the Buildings that were a University, highlighting the deep connection between the academic institution and the local community.
The mayor Judith Piquet expressed her satisfaction, underscoring the significance of the recognition for Galván. Since his arrival in Alcalá more than three decades ago, Galván has been a prominent figure, driving significant advances at the University and strengthening the bond with the city and its institutions. Their leadership has been key to making Alcalá de Henares a more visible and accessible World Heritage City, through academic and cultural projects.
Fernando Galván Reula, born in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, has lived in Alcalá since 1994. Throughout his career, he has accumulated numerous academic honors, including honorary doctorates and prestigious international recognitions. Their contribution has transcended the academic sphere, and they were named an Honorary Officer of the British Empire by Queen Elizabeth II in 2017.
Its focus has been on strengthening the ties between the University and the city, collaborating with the City Council and fostering the participation of the public in academic life through various projects and cultural offerings. During his tenure as rector, he spearheaded major restorations of historical-artistic heritage, such as the courtyard of Santo Tomás de Villanueva and the Chapel of San Ildefonso, in addition to promoting the celebration of significant cultural events.
One of its most notable initiatives is the Cisneros Virtual Archive, which digitized historical archives that had been moved to Madrid in 1836, thereby recovering a vital documentary heritage for the history of the Complutense University.
Gustavo Severien, spokesperson for the government team, justified the recognition of Galván for his tireless work and contributions to Alcalá, appealing to everyone to back the appointment. The distinction as an Adopted Son not only celebrates his achievements, but also reaffirms his legacy and commitment to the city that welcomed him.
