The autonomous communities governed by the People’s Party (PP) in Spain watch with anticipation the upcoming political autumn, focused on the possible call for early general elections by Pedro Sánchez, if he fails to pass the State Budget. Castile and León, led by Alfonso Fernández Mañueco, and Andalusia, led by Juan Manuel Moreno Bonilla, are considering aligning their regional elections with possible general elections. While Mañueco has extended the budgets after failing to reach an agreement with Vox, Moreno Bonilla, with an absolute majority, assesses the impact of a possible erosion of socialist support that could benefit his candidacy.
At the same time, other PP autonomous communities, such as Extremadura and the Balearic Islands, are exploring their own strategies. Extremadura, under the leadership of María Guardiola, is working on its budgets without completely ruling out a possible early election, while Aragon, led by Jorge Azcón, and the Balearic Islands, governed by Marga Prohens, are for now rejecting the idea of bringing the elections forward. Within the PP, several moves are being discussed, including coordinated calls for elections by the autonomous communities, although caution prevails due to the risk of being left once again at the mercy of pacts with Vox, mainly in those territories without absolute majorities.
