This Wednesday, in front of the Congress of Deputies in Madrid, actors Carolina Yuste and Juan Diego Botto led the reading of a manifesto titled We do not resign ourselves to the rearmament and to the war in Europe. This event, held at a landmark setting such as the Lions' Staircase, coincided with a plenary session in which President Pedro Sánchez addressed security and defense issues. Supported by prominent figures such as Javier Bardem, Aitana Sánchez-Gijón, Luis Tosar, and the singer Rozalén, as well as 842 associations, including Greenpeace and Alliance for Solidarity, the artists raised their voices against what they call an "unbridled increase in military spending." They denounce that this decision is being carried out without the proper public debate, and they demand more transparency regarding the decisions that could increase military tensions on the continent.
The manifesto underscores its categorical opposition to European rearmament by arguing that it will not bring peace, but rather could intensify the risk of armed conflicts. They harshly criticize the reallocation of funds that, in their view, should be allocated to social spending rather than arming themselves with tanks, rifles, fighter jets, and missiles, as a decision by the belligerent elites. Joining in the reading were deputies from parties such as Sumar, Podemos, Bildu, and the BNG, who also took part in the demonstration with banners and slogans of "No to war". This act underscores the growing concern among cultural and social sectors regarding defense policies in Europe, urging public reflection on government priorities during times of peace and war.
