Barcelona has launched its candidacy to obtain funds from the Government's new call for the Neighborhoods Law, with a €25 million project aimed at rehabilitating housing in Ciutat Vella. This plan, funded jointly by the City Council and the Generalitat, focuses on two main areas: the improvement of common areas in complex properties and the installation of elevators, especially in buildings where 75% lack them, affecting a community that is predominantly elderly. During a press conference, the mayor Jaume Collboni, together with the General Director of City Promotion, Àlex Montes, highlighted that the city aims to secure a grant of up to 12.5 million euros for these specific challenges.
Collboni described the relaunch of the Neighborhoods Law as a 'historic event' for the Catalan municipalities, recalling its previous implementation under the governments of Pasqual Maragall and José Montilla, and its subsequent adoption by Ada Colau. The current plan not only covers physical improvements but also includes community projects that foster social change. Moreover, the mayor emphasized that the Barcelona City Council is already working on 27 priority neighborhoods to address structural inequalities. In particular, for Ciutat Vella, significant investments have been planned, continuing with the micro actions that aim to revitalize the local community.
