Mayors from Junts per Catalunya have traveled to Waterloo, Belgium, to meet with Carles Puigdemont, the former president of the Generalitat and leader of the party, in order to discuss urgent issues such as immigration, the occupation of housing, and the fight against multirecidivism. This meeting, promoted by the mayor of Sant Cugat, Josep Maria Vallès, responds to coexistence problems in several municipalities and the growing pressure from Aliança Catalana, a far-right party that threatens to attract nationalist votes in the upcoming municipal elections.
The meeting, which also includes Junts' secretary-general, Jordi Turull, seeks to define a new political strategy that would allow the party's candidates to strike pacts with greater freedom in future elections. Some mayors have questioned Puigdemont's resistance to agreements with the PSC and suggest evaluating possible pacts with Aliança Catalana where it would be beneficial. Moreover, they are trying to consolidate their position on immigration matters, especially after the failure to transfer immigration powers to the Generalitat, an issue that resonates strongly in the Catalan social debate.
