The City Council of Alcalá de Henares has taken a significant step toward urban sustainability with the installation of twelve new Neighborhood Clean Points in all districts of the city. This initiative is designed to facilitate the recycling of household hazardous waste, bringing this essential service closer to neighborhoods and promoting a culture of sustainability.
Thanks to an investment of €68,302.08, financed by the European Union's NextGeneration EU funds, residents of Alcalá de Henares will be able to deposit batteries, light bulbs, aerosols, small electronic devices, and other waste in an accessible way without depending on the traditional hours of the recycling centers.
Vicente Pérez Palomar, Environment Councillor, stressed the importance of this measure by stating: “We are bringing recycling closer to the daily lives of the neighbors. Not only are we talking about sustainability: we are turning it into reality, neighborhood by neighborhood, street by street.”
The new local recycling points present two different models suitable for the urban environment. In District I, with a historic character and space limitations, integrated mini-points have been installed that allow the collection of eight types of waste. In the other districts, without spatial restrictions, larger-capacity cabinets have been installed that can collect up to ten types of waste, such as household metals and chemical products. These devices are equipped with informational signs and anti-vandalism materials to ensure their durability and proper use.
In addition to these new points, the city still has a fixed recycling center, a mobile point that visits all districts weekly, and a free collection service for furniture and household items, accessible at 900 10 23 96. The neighbors are encouraged to deposit these objects after 9:00 PM, without interfering with pedestrian traffic.
With the strategic installation of these points, the City Council seeks to facilitate residents’ access to essential environmental services without the need to use vehicles or depend on schedules. This measure strengthens the commitment of Alcalá de Henares to a cleaner, safer, and greener city.
"We want all neighbors to have the opportunity to recycle better and closer to home, in order to build a cleaner, safer and greener city," concluded Pérez Palomar, emphasizing the desire to create an urban environment committed to sustainability.
