Madrid, September 17, 2025. The Ministry of Health has celebrated World Patient Safety Day, this year dedicated to the care of newborns and children. With the motto "Safe Patients from the Start!", the event was inaugurated by the Minister of Health, who highlighted patient safety as an essential pillar of the health system.
Spain participates annually in this initiative of the World Health Organization (WHO), in collaboration with the autonomous communities and the Spanish Society for Healthcare Quality (SECA). The minister stressed that "all children have the right to safe and high-quality health care from the start of life."
The program spanned from neonatal care to adolescence, addressing the transition from pediatrics to adult care. Minors represent a particularly vulnerable population that requires specific approaches to prevent avoidable harm. The pediatric units face the challenge of adapting practices to minimize risks.
Mónica García, in her speech, emphasized that patient safety is a professional and institutional responsibility, reinforced by the recent Patient Safety Strategy 2025-2035. This strategy, approved on July 4 of last year, aims to move toward a safer and more person-centered care model.
The proposed measures include the prevention of healthcare-associated infections, the safe use of medications, and the promotion of incident reporting systems. Also includes the "NO HACER" program to reduce unnecessary practices and a regulatory update, such as Royal Decree 391/2025 on radiotherapy safety.
The minister recalled that a universal National Health System must not permit safety lapses, thanking the commitment of the participating entities. The day concluded with practical workshops on the safe use of medications and the transition of care from pediatrics to adult care.
The activity benefited from strong organizational collaboration by SECA, and the entire event could be followed via an online broadcast.
